Southern Flying Squirrel in Ann Arbor on a late Autumn day at the University of Michigan - December 14th, 2018

            So today was a red-letter day on campus.  Well, maybe a Blue-letter day since it is the University of Michigan.  I was walking in the Law Quad around noon when I went over to a tree where Fox Squirrels normally hang out around (on the South University side near the center arch).  When I  saw something out of the corner of my eye.  It was small.  Was it a chipmunk?  No - its grey.  Grey??? Grey???  OMG - Its a flying squirrel.  I have never seen one before, but I was hoping to see one when I was out west.  They are nocturnal, so seeing them in the middle of the day was a huge surprise.  I had to look it up in my squirrel trail guide and a number of websites, but I am fairly certain this is a Southern Flying Squirrel.  These are amazing and I have never, ever, never seen a flying squirrel on campus.  I was not the only one excited to see this Southern Flying Squirrel - you can see a fox squirrel got very excited to see this visitor also.  So I have been taking pictures of squirrels on campus for ten years - and I have never seen one of these.  on a cool and overcast late Autumn day in Ann Arbor.  Taken on Friday December 14th, 2018 at the University of Michigan.
