A Game Of Names And Numbers - a photo on Flickriver

In the UK, Joe Public refers to people with an interest in railways as a train spotter. It, to be honest, is a rather derogatory term, it conjures an image of a nerdy kid with bottle bottom glasses, sensible shoes, an anorak and a notebook, filled with incomprehensible scribblings and numbers which make next to no sense.

Those who are into their trains would never ever use the term, except perhaps as a put down for their peers.

In the USA, I hear two terms, railfan, as in we're going railfanning at the Folkston Funnel on the weekend, or foamers, presumably in reference to some slightly deranged character who gets a little over-excited at the sight of the Silver Meteor with dribble, drool and all…

Those who have made my acquaintance over the flickr years will know that I really don't fit the UK stereotype, the most sensible shoes I've worn since junior school are a pair of Converse All Stars, my glasses are essential if I want to read something but don't in any way resemble anything bottle-esque (is that even a word...) and the facial piercing would shred an anorak in seconds.

But that notebook and scrawl? Essential. I haven't 'spotted' a train since about 1978. But my OCD trait means that if I can't put a number somewhere in that flickr caption, it will bug me for the rest of my days. Seriously.

I don't know how the American railfans feel about this one, the vast majority of them that I've come across are way too busy making You Tube videos of what they see to notice some guy toting an old-fashioned stills camera, DSLR  or otherwise.

Maybe the GoPro is the modern notebook. Heck, you don't need to write it down if it appears on the screen in front of your very eyes.

Me? I'll keep my DSLR and scribbly book thanks very much.
