Today, a flock of about a dozen wild turkeys came strolling through my backyard. It was turkey preening day. Not on the calendar, but just as a matter of group think. All of the turkeys spent most of their twenty minutes visiting the yard preening and
fussing with their feathers. They pecked about for some food occasionally. But grooming and preening was the order of the day.
I managed to catch this turkey in an in-between mode, not eating, not grooming, which made for a fairly nice turkey portrait.
A week or two from now, they would do best to hide somewhere on high and keep a low profile for a few weeks after that. Say, lay low until the first week of December. Live to groom another day and not end up on somebody's Thanksgiving dinner plate.
