Santa Maria della Concezione in Campo Marzio, a rare view from via Mandalena. Discovered a few steps from the Pantheon, whose ancient origins go back in history until the eighth century, the special character of this church results from the changes and interventions that took place during almost a thousand years. Today we admire the Renaissance aspect of the church rendered in 1660 by Carlo Maderno and Francesco Paparelli and with the last baroque style restyling rendered by Antonio Giovanni de Rossi in 1685. "At the time of the iconoclastic persecutions of the eighth century, a group of Basilian nuns escaped from Constantinople, and obtained permission from the Pope S. Zaccaria (741 - 752) to found a monastery in Campo Marzio with an annexed church dedicated to San Gregorio Nazareno, where they transferred the relic of the saint's body, and an oratory, where the venerated image of the "Madonna Advocate" was then placed. For this icon, escaped from a terrible fire in 1525 and miraculously found in a well, Michelangelo created a marble tabernacle ( unfortunately lost ).
Between 1562 and 1564 Chiarina Colonna, the abbess of the nuns (which by the ninth century had embraced the Benedictine Rule), ordered the construction, in place of the oratory, a new external church to the cloister of the monastery which was called St. Maria in Campo Marzio; the building, with a single nave and a rectangular apse, had two entrances: the main one inside the convent and the side entrance on the Piazza in Campo Marzio.
During the seventeenth century, the monastic complex was enlarged and modernized with a series of works directed by Carlo Maderno and Francesco Peparelli, finished after 1660. Later, on the initiative of the abbess Maria Olimpia Pani, the sixteenth-century church was completely rebuilt by Giovanni Antonio de 'Rossi (1681-1695).
