Preston St.Mary (2) - a photo on Flickriver

            Although it isn't always the case that a village's name reflects that of its parish church, this is St. Mary's church in Preston St. Mary, Suffolk. Preston is a small attractive village in the Babergh district that mostly lies on the side of a steep hill overlooking the valley of the River Brett. This shot was taken about half an hour before sunset at the end of a sunny spring day.

There was a church on this site at the time of the Domesday book (1086) where the village is referred to as "Prestetune", but the earliest parts of the current building date from the 14th century. However, the church was struck by lightning in 1868 and the tower and nave roof totally demolished. The rebuilding was overseen by none other than Sir Arthur Blomfeld, the famous Victorian architect.

Rather unusually, the main access to St. Mary's is through the North Porch; an ornate confection of late 15th century flushwork, which mercifully survived the lightning strike intact.
