Bottesford Belvoir Angels - a photo on Flickriver

            Belvoir angels are a distinct style of artwork found on gravestones in and around the Vale of Belvoir, mostly from 1690-1750; no one knows who carved them, but they have generated plenty of interest over the years. Typically, they feature one or more round-faced angels, usually with an hourglass and cross bones on either side, signifying the passage of time and ultimately, death. This is the only (as far as I know) example at Bottesford church, Leics, the grave of William Fox, who died in 1719.
