Sanderling - Calidris alba (Scolopacidae) 119x-3510

            Sanderlings are very active little sandpipers found on beaches around the world. They can often be seen running like clockwork toys into and out of the breaking waves. As an adaptation to facilitate all this running, they are the only shorebird to have lost their hind toes, as can be clearly seen in this photo.
