In Britain, they are sometimes called conker trees because of their link with the game of conkers, played with the seeds, also called conkers.

In Großbritannien und Irland binden Kinder Kastanien für das Spiel Conkers („Kastanien“) an Fäden: Ein Kind lässt seine Kastanie am Faden hängen, während ein zweites Kind seine Kastanie auf die hängende Kastanie schleudert. Wenn eine der Kastanien beim Zusammenprall zerbricht, gewinnt das Kind mit der unbeschädigten Kastanie einen Punkt. Seit 1965 werden jährlich Conkers-Weltmeisterschaften ausgetragen.

In den beiden Weltkriegen ließ die britische Regierung Kastanien sammeln, um Aceton zur Herstellung des Sprengstoffs Kordit zu gewinnen.

Alle Teile der Rosskastanien sind schwach giftig.

Allerdings lässt es sich recht gut zu Kaminholz verarbeiten. Ist es gut getrocknet, hinterlässt es beim Verbrennen wenig Rückstände. Die Gefahr von Ablagerungen im Kaminzug ist bei lufttrockenem Holz gering.
