Eye of a lark sparrow - a photo on Flickriver

            Today was a very hot day. I found this sparrow in my yard 20 feet from the bird bath. At first I thought he was dead, then he had a seizure. His breathing was labored and his color was purplish.  

What to do? As a veterinarian I considered several possible diagnoses.  The only one that fit and the only one I could  treat was heat stroke. I cooled him down with water and gave him water then hummingbird food (sugar water) orally and he quickly responded. I kept him in a cool environment until I thought he could take care of himself.  Before letting him fly away I took this photo with a macro lens.
