Kröflustöð

            High- and lowpressure steam from boreholes at the Krafla Power Station, near the Krafla volcano, drives two 30 MW turbines. 

The idea for the plant was conceived in 1973 and 24 test holes were drilled to determine the project's feasibility. The awakening of the Krafla volcano in 1975 (after a resting period of several hundred years) with a series of eruptions and surface subsidence lowered the project's potential and even deactivated a primary steam source. The project was completed nonetheless in 1977. 

The installation of the station’s second turbine unit began in 1996. New boreholes were drilled and older ones were repaired. Steam extraction used improved technology, like directional drilling. Since additional drilling and renovations were completed in 1999, Krafla has been operated at its original intended full capacity of 60 MW.

In total, 33 boreholes were drilled, including 17 high pressure production wells and 5 low-pressure production wells. The plant uses 110kg/second of 7.7 bar saturated high-pressure steam and 36 kg/sec of 2.2 bar saturated low-pressure steam.
