Last words

            The commanding Officer’s room at the Former Japanese Naval Underground Headquarters near Naha, Okinawa, Japan. The tunnel complex was dug here by the Japanese Navy Corps of Engineers (Yamane Division) in 1944. Admiral Minoru Ota and over 4,000 of his men were killed in combat with the US 6th Marine Division in these tunnels, with more than 170 committing honorable suicide when the battle against the Americans was definitely lost. In the staff room, shrapnel from the grenades used by some officers can be seen in the walls. General Ota used his service pistol. Before that, he left a farewall poem on the wall, still visible today, translated as: "How could we rejoice over our birth, but to die an honorable death under the Emperor's flag". A few days earlier, Ota sent a telegram to mainland Japan asking for recognition of the contributions of Okinawan people and expressing remorse for the way they were treated. "…they will go unrecognized, unrewarded… Seeing this, I feel deeply depressed and I am at a loss of words for them. Every tree, every plant life is gone. Even the weeds are burnt. By the end of June, there will be no food. This is how the Okinawan people have fought the war."
