            L'île mesure 428 km2, ce qui en fait la plus grande des Cyclades. Elle se trouve à 190 km du Pirée. Le mont Zas , est le plus haut sommet des Cyclades avec 1 004 mètres.
Naxos doit une partie de sa célébrité à la mythologie : selon la légende, Thésée y abandonna Ariane, qui fut recueillie par Dionysos, divinité tutélaire de l'île. La cité naxienne fut puissante à l'époque archaïque et prospère durant l'Empire byzantin.
L'île est riche : marbre et émeri sont exportés tandis que son agriculture produit la célèbre pomme de terre de Naxos, mais aussi des fromages, du miel et le Kitro, une liqueur de cédrat.
