Milky Way and Mt Rainier - a photo on Flickriver

From Sunrise in Mt Rainier National Park, WA. Up on the hill behind the lodges is a great place to be at dusk, or in this case, in the middle of the night. This was taken about 1:00 a.m. on the night of the new moon in late July when the MW lined up nicely with the peak. With no moon showing it gets super dark up there at 6500 feet but the stars appear so bright and contrasty. Just a single exposure here at 20 seconds. Longer exposures and the stars will be trails rather than pin-point, depending on the FL of your lens. Focusing in the dark is fun - pick a bright star and zoom all the way in live view, wide open, increase the ISO as needed, and focus manually to make the star appear small and pin point. You can focus on infinity while there is still light in the sky then switch the lens into MF mode and don't touch it, or tape the focus ring into place. I think it is better to focus on a bright star at night time though when the lens is at the temperature you'll be using it.
