It's been a long, long time since I've seen a wild Columbine. The last time I saw a red one was entering Sequoia National Park in 2005, and I spotted one very pristine one hanging over the bank of the Kern River (see below) in south central California. Risking limb, but not life, I attemped to get one good shot and ended up standing in the Kerm which is really snowpack run off and soooo cold I swear I lost all feeling in my feet.

I heard that I didn't have to climb a mountain to see another red, but I'd better hurry over to the Garden. Last year, I was told that there was a Mangave "Mayan Queen" about to bloom, but I missed it by three days. Some dry garden flowers don't last but a day, so now when I hear about something I want to see, I go.

I stopped by the Garden on the way back from one of three appointments, and there it was ... along with six other flowers that I stayed to get shots of and almost missed my fourth appointment. Now, the Columbine, even in red (usually yellow, white, blue) is not the Holy Grail, but it is beautiful and I wanted it. (I promise to catch up on my commenting tomorrow ... after another appointment.)

Aquilegia (common names: granny's bonnet,[1] columbine) is a genus of about 60–70 species of perennial plants that are found in meadows, woodlands, and at higher altitudes throughout the Northern Hemisphere, known for the spurred petals of their flowers.
