Quatre ans après le lancement du projet, Franck Argentin, le fondateur du réseau de distribution de mobilier design RBC, inaugure à Montpellier son nouveau showroom, un bâtiment de 2000 m2 signé des Ateliers Jean Nouvel (avec l’agence C+D Architecture, architectes associés). La construction de ce "concept store", non loin de l’Hôtel de ville livré en 2011 par l’architecte français, au cœur du quartier de Port-Marianne, a représenté un investissement de 6 millions d’euros HT pour le maître d'ouvrage. De l’extérieur, le bâtiment apparaît comme une boîte métallique opaque seulement ponctuée de quelques mots-clefs immaculés : "créer", "rêver", "lire", "cuisiner", "éclairer", "habiter".
C’est à la nuit tombée que le bâtiment se dévoile de l’intérieur. Baigné de lumière, il s’inscrit de manière sensible dans le paysage grâce au travail du plasticien Yann Kersalé. Au-delà du simple showroom consacré à l’exposition et à la vente de mobilier, le RBC Design Center propose également aux visiteurs une librairie dédiée à l’architecture et à l’art de vivre, ainsi qu'un restaurant (le MIA, où opère le chef Pascal Sanchez). «Je rêvais d’avoir en un seul lieu toutes les expressions de la culture design réunies», explique Franck Argentin.
