Broad-leaved Helleborine - a photo on Flickriver

            It's a wet Monday, pouring down with rain, but my youngest, Phoebe, wanted us to go for a walk, nothing else to do today so why not. Faversham to Clockhouse Lane, Owens Court to Saffery's Farm and onto Hogben's Hill, along Lee's Court Valley to Shepherds Hill near Perry Woods and here is the premier Broad-leaved Helleborine site in Kent. We used to go to the Larches at the bottom of Detling Hill along the Pilgrims Way but this site has become overgrown and mismanaged, it's also a drive and as we are leaving the car on the drive as much as possible, not a choice. However, there is a Beach Hanger within walking distance, (as above) and the route travels the footpaths through the beautiful Kent countryside between Faversham and Selling. There must be over 200 to 300 spikes just coming into flower as well as populations of Early Purple, Pyramidal, Fly, White Helleborine, Greater Butterfly and Birds Nest orchids throughout the season but for me, the best place in Kent for the Broad-leaved. Many flavours, from light green, olive green, violet, crimson, pink and yellow tinged purple, well worth the walk even in the pouring rain! More flavours to come......
