Kent's Broad-leaved Helleborines "Epipactis helleborine"

            We are so lucky in Faversham to have so many wild orchid species including and probably the best of the Broad-leaved Helleborine sites. Sandwiched between a pine plantation and fields full of wheat and oil seed is a strip of beech hangers and here in the dappled shade under tall, mature trees is a large population of these majestic spikes. Many colours and forms but so early in the season the typical green and violet examples are in full flower. In a week or so there will be red, crimson, pink and all green variety's that I will visit once back from our birding and walking trip to Suffolk and Norfolk next week.
