Distribuição e habitat: São, actualmente, reconhecidas três subespécies nesta espécie: Crax f. fasciolata, representada no Zoológico de Lisboa, que se encontra no Centro e Sudoeste do Brasil, no Paraguai e no Norte da Argentina; Crax f. pinima, que se encontra no Nordeste brasileiro; e Crax f. grayi, que se encontra no Leste da Bolívia. Os mutuns-pinima vivem em florestas tropicais húmidas, semicaducifólias e de galeria, bem como na orla de matas e em praias, sendo vistos, nestas últimas, principalmente de manhã cedo ou ao fim da tarde. Identificação: Existe dimorfismo sexual. Os machos têm uma crista de penas negras e enroladas, a cera (base do bico) amarela e a plumagem predominantemente negra, com a região abdominal e cloacal de cor branca, tal como na extremidade das penas caudais. As fêmeas apresentam uma crista de penas brancas e negras, plumagem negra na região dorsal marcada por estriações de cor clara e penas de cor castanha no abdómen e na região cloacal. Os machos das três subespécies reconhecidas nesta espécie não apresentam diferenças notórias, ao contrário do que sucede com as fêmeas, que se distinguem, principalmente, com base na tonalidade da região ventral, na extensão e tipo de estriações e na quantidade de branco na crista. Hábitos: Procuram alimento no solo. Vivem solitários ou em casais. São, aparentemente, sedentários. Dieta: Alimentam-se principalmente de frutos, mas também de flores e sementes. Reprodução: A época de nidificação decorre de novembro a dezembro. O ninho é construído nas árvores, com ramos e folhas, e ambos os sexos participam nesta actividade. A postura é de dois ovos, cuja incubação dura 30 dias e é realizada apenas pela fêmea. As crias são nidífugas, isto é, abandonam o ninho precocemente, neste caso imediatamente após a eclosão; depois, começam a alimentar-se sozinhas, mas seguem a progenitora até serem independentes. Estado de conservação e principais ameaças: A subpespécie C. f. pinima encontra-se criticamente ameaçada de extinção. The bare-faced curassow (Crax fasciolata) is a species of bird in the Cracidae family, the chachalacas, guans, curassows, etc. It is found in eastern-central and southern Brazil, Paraguay, and eastern Bolivia, and extreme northeast Argentina, in the cerrado, pantanal, and the southeastern region of the Amazon basin. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests and subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. Taxonomy: There are three recognized subspecies: C. f. fasciolata (Spix, 1825) - fasciated curassow - lowlands of Brazil to Paraguay and northeast Argentina C. f. grayi (Ogilvie-Grant, 1893) - eastern Bolivia C. f. pinima (Pelzeln, 1870) - Natterer's curassow - northeastern Brazil. Description: The bare-faced curassow is a large bird reaching a length of 82 to 92 centimetres (32 to 36 in). The sexes differ in appearance. The male has black upper parts faintly glossed with greenish-olive, with an unfeathered face with yellowish bare skin, a small black crest, and white underparts. The female has a black head, throat, neck and upper mantle, and a black and white barred crest. The remainder of the upper parts are greenish-black barred with white or ochre. The black tail is tipped with white or ochre and the underparts are black with ochre barring on the breast, paling to a yellowish or ochre belly. The facial skin on females is blackish. Behaviour: The bare-faced curassow lives in moist, semi-deciduous and gallery forests, often near the fringes of the woodland. It mainly feeds on fruit, but seeds, flowers and small invertebrates are also eaten. Breeding takes place in the summer in the southern part of its range, with the nests being platforms of sticks in trees. Status: The bare-faced curassow has a wide range and is fairly numerous in parts of its range, however it is subject to hunting and to the destruction of its habitat and the total population is likely to be declining quite rapidly.
