along the Mekong, Luang Prabang, Laos

Mekong passenger barges docked in Luang Prabang, glistening in the late afternoon light.

I visited as part of my ongoing journey 'along the Mekong' in stages; this section travelling over 2 days on such barges starting from the golden triangle in the north to see Luang Prabang during the Buddhist new year in April 2009 (more pics to follow).

Back then there was no dam on the mighty Mekong (outside China at least), only early plans to develop Laos into the 'battery of SE Asia' using hydropower. As of today, several dams have been built and more are in planning, that have major effects on the health and wellbeing of the ecosystems along the river, and the many millions of often very poor people it sustains.

There is now even a plan to develop yet another dam not far from Luang Prabang, that would further undermine ecological, social and cultural integrity and even threatens the city's status as a UNESCO World Heritage. Here is hoping that authorities widen their horizon and amend plans to less damaging and more sustainable development.
