London Transport tram No. 1370 (ex No. 1446) @ Belgravia - c1948

            An old photograph of London Transport (LT) tram No. 1370 showing '54 - Grove Park via Lewisham' destination blinds, the car still has its war time headlight cover on. The photo paper is 'Crown Copyright Reserved' paper that was forces surplus and extensively sold in the late 1940's.

The photo is stamped on the reverse as having been taken by 'Aviation & Transport Photographs'.

No. 1370 was built as an E/1 class car for London County Council Tramways (LCC) in 1909 by Hurst Nelson seating 32/46 and running on Heenan & Froude trucks. In Jun 1933 it was severely damaged in an accident and its number was given to an LCC M class tram originally numbered 1446.

The new 1370 (ex 1446) was built in 1910 for LCC as a class M car with a Hurst Nelson body seating 24/38 running on a 4 wheel Hurst Nelson truck. In 1932/3 it was modernised ('Pullmanised') by LCC and reclassified as an ME/3 class car, having its body lengthened, an E/1 type truck and electrical equipment fitted, a new domed roof, a new dual destination and route number blind, plus other interior refurbishments to seating etc. It then continued in service as No. 1370 until being withdrawn then disposed of (broken up or sold) at Penhall Road Works Yard in Jan 1952.

Ownership of the original severely damaged No. 1370 moved to the LPTB in 1933 and it was sent to the Central Repair Depot at Charlton where it was rebuilt and modernised with an  ME/3 class body type and general refurbishments. In 1934 it went into passenger service with fleet No. 2, continuing in service with that number until being withdrawn then disposed of (broken up or sold) at Penhall Road in Jul 1952, the parts of the London tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to trolleybus/bus operation closing the same month.
