Leeds trams No's. 290 & 18 - dated Apr 1949

            An old photograph (a bit faded and damaged) taken in Kirkstall Road Works of Leeds City Tramways (LCT) trams No. 18 showing '27 - Belle Isle via Hunslet Road' destination blinds, and No. 290 (still on its low loader) which had recently arrived from Southampton (the trucks arrived separately). It was the first of the purchased Southampton Corporation Tramways (SCT) cars to arrive (at Leeds 11 Apr 1949) and was the only car to be painted and prepared by SCT prior to being sent, unfortunately they put the wings on the LCT side transfer in the wrong place.

The photo reverse is stamped with the date 25 Apr 1949 and as it having been taken by R. B. Parr.

🚃 No. 290 was ex SCT built domed roof (a lowheight domed roof to pass under the 'Bargate Arch') 'Pullman Mark 1' car No. 108 seating 28/44 and running on a 4 wheel Peckham P35 truck. It first ran in SCT service in 1930, was withdrawn and sold to LCT in 1949, arriving at Leeds on the 11 April, just two weeks before this photo was taken.

It first ran in LCT service in May 1949, then the following month was repainted in a light blue and white livery. In Aug/Sep 1951 it was overhauled, painted in a BET red and white livery, had a single destination blind box fitted, and was reseated (changing the capacity to 24/36). In Sep 1953 it was involved in a collision, damage being so bad that it was withdrawn from service, the following month it was burned at Lowfields Road Permanent Way Yard.

🚃 No. 18 was a 'Chamberlain' class fully enclosed car built by Brush seating 26/46 and running on a 4 wheel EMB pivotal type J truck. It went into service Jan 1927, last ran in service Apr 1953, and in the June was burned at Lowfields Road Permanent Way Yard.

The parts of the Leeds tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to bus operation closed in Nov 1959.
