Birmingham No. 843 - LRTL tour 23 Oct 1938

            An old photograph of Birmingham Corporation Tramways (BCT) tram No. 843 on a Light Rail Transport League (LRTL) tram enthusiast tour showing 'Special Car' destination blinds. The tour took place on 23 Oct 1938 and went from Dudley to Rednal.

The photo has no details on the reverse but if you know who took it please message me and I will credit them.

No. 843 was a one off experimental car with a fully enclosed lightweight Duralumin body built by Brush (completed May 1930) seating 27/33 and running on Maley & Taunton 'Burnley' maximum traction bogies produced in lightweight steel. The body and bogies were 'married up' by BCT at their Kyotts Lake Road Works (KLRW), it entering service in Sep 1930 working out of Cotteridge Depot.

In Jan 1952 it was sent to KLRW suffering from motor trouble and did not enter service again, being withdrawn and kept there in storage. It was sold to W. T. Bird & Sons and in the August was taken to Witton Depot where it was broken up.

The parts of the Birmingham tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to trolleybus/bus operation closed in Jul 1953.
