LT tram No. 393 (ex Croydon 49) in Brigstock Road, Thornton Heath - c1950

An old photograph of London Transport (LT) E/1 design car No. 393 showing '42 - Greyhound - Croydon' front destination blinds, and a 'Thornton Heath - West Croydon - Greyhound' side destination board. This is from an enthusiasts tram/bus photo and postcard album, the latest pictures date to the early 1950s, this one has the initials LOS so the photographer (and/or copyright owner) was 'Lens of Sutton'.

The description written next to the photo is "London Transport No 393 on the Thornton Heath route. One of the ex Croydon cars [LOS]".

I assume that the photo album belonged to a young person because at the front is a list of initials indicating the photographers. CC - C. Carter, HOD - Haynes of Dulwich (W. J. Haynes), JRM - Rex, WRGA - Robin Anderson of South Birmingham, MM - Mummy, JKM - Daddy, CJDM - Me, LOS - Lens of Sutton.

No 393 was ex Croydon Corporation Tramways (CCT) car No. 49, built in 1928 by Hurst Nelson seating 27/42 and running on Hurst Nelson maximum traction swing-bolster bogies. Its design was virtually the same as the 'E/1 class' although CCT called this tram class 'B/2'. From new it had two trolley poles, and a truck mounted plough carrier which was changed to body mounted in 1930. Its ownership transferred to the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB) in 1933 when it was renumbered from 49 to 393. When the Croydon tram routes were withdrawn in Apr 1951 this car (and the other Croydon based trams) was moved to New Cross Depot, the next year No. 393 was withdrawn from service and in Feb 1952 was disposed of (broken up or sold) at the LT Penhall Road Works.

The parts of the London tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to trolleybus/bus closed in Jul 1952.
