Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps)

Herman's Pond, Rancho San Rafael, Reno, Washoe Co, Nevada (July 30th, 2014). 104b1. Small pond in a large county park in NW Reno.

Chick (nest 2) motoring along in hot pursuit of one of its parents. Seven chicks hatched out from Nest 2, all of which still survived 12-13 days later when this photo was taken.

An earlier nest (Nest 1) was built by the same pair in a cattail patch in another part of the pond. Two almost-grown chicks from this nest are still on the pond but keep well away from the new brood and are now fending for themselves without help from their parents.
