Red-breasted Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus ruber)

Probing at the trunk of a sugar maple (Acer saccharum). Note the oozing sapwells at the lower right, two of many in the trunk.

Of the 2 currently recognized subspecies, our bird most closely resembles the dark northern form (S. r. ruber).
