別名 Other Names：【台語】水加令、過塘雞、黑水雞或田雞仔【客語】紅骨雞。
棲所環境 Habitat：
臺灣普遍的留鳥，種群數量普遍常見，數量相當豐多，目前尚無生存危機，平地至沿海地帶之水田、溝渠、魚塭、沼澤等濕地等均有分布。
紅冠水雞不花心，是一夫一妻制，雄雌都很有責任。警覺性甚高，不善飛行，性羞澀，行事十分隱密，飛行時雙腳下垂，常穿梭於草叢中。通常在光線微明如晨昏之際活動。
繁殖期為4至7月，築巢於地上，一年可產2窩具繁殖領域，每窩約有3至5顆佈滿紅斑的蛋，親鳥會輪流孵蛋，並共同擔負起撫育幼鳥的責任。雛鳥為早熟性，孵化不久就跟隨親鳥活動覓食。
