生態與分佈 Ecology：
台灣竹雞原與中國大陸華南地區的竹雞（Bambusicola thoracica）放在同一種的不同亞種中，近年已將臺灣竹雞獨立出來，成為台灣的特有種(Endemic species in Taiwan)鳥類之一，清晨在野外常能聽到「雞狗乖、雞狗乖」的聲音就是〝竹雞仔〞的叫聲。通常出現於中、低海拔之灌木叢、樹林環境。常會出現在道路旁的樹叢底部，習慣躲在樹叢底部到處亂竄，性羞怯機警，遇到人會不知所措地慢慢走回草叢中，在野外常可以見到牠們的蹤跡，以植物種子、嫩葉、小昆蟲等為主食。
