普遍留鳥，在台灣有部分於冬季會南遷。全身體態優美修長，羽色潔白，嘴、腳為黑色，腳趾為黃色，單獨或以鬆散的小群體活動；共同築巢和棲息；繁殖期時頭部有著生兩條長羽，眼睛轉為紅色。在濕地，湖泊，河流和河口等區域，幾乎在臺灣任何有小魚的地方都很常見。
