Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella) - a photo on Flickriver

            Stunning birds which sadly have become much more scarce here. In 1997 there was a reported 65% decline in Northern Ireland since 1991 (RSPB) and it is listed as of being of Red Conservation Status across Ireland. 

The main issues are agricultural intensification, the change from spring to autumn grown cereals, loss of hedgerows and a near mono-culture of grass.  Approximately 92% of the 4.19 million hectares of land used for agriculture in Ireland is  grassland (Central Statistics Office, 2012) and in NI 70% of the grassland is defined as improved (DAERA).
