Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus)/ Foitheach mór

            County Antrim - January 2023. A species I rarely see in the home patch, so had to travel further south in the County for this image. This bird is still largely in it's winter plumage, but will soon develop it's breeding finery.
The Great Crested Grebe was one of the species hunted to near extinction to satisfy the the trade in ladies hats in the late 19th Century. Emily Williamson was so sickened by the killing of such beautiful birds, to provide decorative millinery features, she started the Society for the Protection of Birds in 1889. This helped bring about the 1921 Plumage (Prohibition) Act, and the start of modern bird protection in Britain. The organisation she helped form became the RSPB.
Lough Neagh supports Ireland's largest breeding population of this species, and this is part of the reason why the lough is a Special Protection Area (SPA) and an Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI).
