Dudley Hippodrome R.I.P. - a photo on Flickriver

            This scene is looking from Castle Hill at 3 aspects of the Dudley Hippodrome.. 
This building was the splendid Hippodrome theatre. It was built on the site of Dudley Opera House which was destroyed by fire in 1936, the new theatre opened on 19th December 1938, it was designed by Hurley Robinson, a local man born in Handsworth (14/06/1883 - 24/02/1953).  The building remained open as a variety theatre until 1964. It was subsequently operated as a Gala bingo hall until 2009 when it closed, the fine building still standing is a sadly vandalized and boarded shadow of its former self although pictures on local news suggest the interior is quite intact, the word "Hippodrome" can be made out as a ghost sign in the dirt.  
Sadly within the last fortnight it has been announced that the valiant attempt to save the Hippodrome has ended unsuccessfully, it is to be demolished and a new University building will replace it.
Photography is nearly impossible as half of this busy road is closed for Midland Metro extension work.
