My First Flyer

            After I moved to Portland in fall 1989, it started raining. And it kept raining. It rained, and rained, and rained. All I remember is that it seemed like the only days it was sunny were midweek work days. After life in Klamath Falls, which bills itself as "Oregon's City of Sunshine," the weather was a shock. 

Saturdays back then were great days then if you were a railfan in Portland. On Saturday mornings, Southern Pacific would dispatch a Whiteson Flyer from Brookyn Yard, bound for the Oregon Steel plant at McMinnville. The Whiteson typically ran with five or six SD9s on the Tillamook, Newberg and Westside branches. It had everything - modest speeds, scenery, big timber trestles and first generation power.  

When Saturday, January 20, 1990 dawned clear, I was off to chase the Whiteson. This image from that day is one of my favorite views of SP in the Willamette Valley. We're watching as the Whiteson switches cars at St. Joseph, a few miles from McMinnville, using the North Yamhill River trestle as a lead.

Five and a half years later, I returned to St. Joseph to catch this same locomotive.  However, in 1995 it was wearing a fresh coat of orange paint applied by a new owner, leading Portland & Western's first-ever train.
