St. James Passage - a photo on Flickriver

St. James Passage

            Standing on Duke's Place looking toward St. James Passage.

In 1888, this passage was known as Church Passage & was much narrower. At around 1:35 AM on the 30th of September 1888, three men leaving the Jewish Imperial Club on Duke Street, noticed a man & a woman standing at the entrance to the passage (the spot may have been where the square cover is).

The woman had her back to the men. Joseph Levy pointed out the couple & said "Look there, I don't like going home by myself when I see those characters about."

Harry Harris didn't pay particular attention to them. The third man, Joseph Lawende had a bit of a better look & noticed the woman had a black jacket & bonnet, was short, & had her hand on the man's chest. They appeared to be conversing quietly.

He described the man as of shabby appearance, about 30 years of age and 5ft. 9in. in height, of fair complexion, having a small fair moustache, and wearing a red neckerchief and a cap with a peak"

Catherine Eddowes was found horribly mutilated at 1:45 AM in the south west corner of Mitre Square (also the darkest part). Lawende was shown some of her clothing & thought they were the same as the clothes worn by the woman that he saw.

If Eddowes was the woman that they saw, which I think is quite likely, then it is also quite likely that the man she was with was Jack the Ripper.

The spot where Eddowes was found is close to where the tall black pole is in the background.

I took quite a lot of shots of this spot on with various films & with different lenses & angles as sometime before this trip I kept thinking about the three men seeing this couple, & had been quite creeped out & disturbed just thinking about it.

Had to go to Casebook.org to refresh my memory on some details.
