08472 Crewe 19-10-84 - a photo on Flickriver

            As I recall, we set out from Pompey specifically to find some of the remaining Class 40's still in action.  Photography was playing a much bigger part in our outings by this time, so light was a bigger  problem than the ability to get places.  With that in mind (bearing in mind it was October) we agreed on Crewe as a destination.
This was the only image I took in Cheshire that day.  Records show there were no 40's on Crewe and so we beat a retreat back to Birmingham and a visit to Bescot.  That was the only place we saw a 40!
Anyway, I digress.  The reason I've uploaded this image is because it shows some of those fantastic wooden bodied trucks that used to rattle around the network back in the day. I'm really not sure why a Gronk should be playing with such a train on the main through lines at Crewe, but here's proof she did!

08472  is incredibly still seeing use in Craigentinny, Edinburgh. 
 New to traffic on the 20th November 1958, this stalwart has now put in an astonishing 62 years of service!.
