Tweevoudig Grammy-winnares Dee Dee Bridgewater behoort met Cassandra Wilson en Dianne Reeves tot de Grote Drie van de huidige jazz. Ook Bridgewater legt zichzelf geen beperkingen op. Een Ella Fitzgerald-songbook of Kurt Weill-eerbetoon gaat haar net zo goed af als een ontdekkingsreis naar de wortels van de Malinese muziek.
Haar loopbaan beslaat inmiddels zo’n veertig jaar, waarin zij aantrad met Pharoah Sanders, zong in de bigband van Mel Lewis en Thad Jones, maar ook haar hand niet omdraaide voor musicals als The Wiz, Cabaret en Lady Day. Bridgewater is een fenomeen, een diva pur sang.
Op de eerste dag van The Hague Jazz 2009 trad Dee Dee Bridgewater op in de grote zaal waar ze een echte show neerzette. Met haar uitstraling palmde ze het publiek moeiteloos in - wat ze later op de avond nogmaals deed, toen ze onverwacht op 't podium verscheen tijdens het concert van Hugh Masekela.
