Seattle - Pioneer Building - a photo on Flickriver

Pioneer Square was at the center of Seattle's downtown area and was rebuilt after the Great Seattle Fire of 1889.  The Pioneer Building, completed in 1892, was part of the rebuilding effort.  When downtown expanded to the north, the Pioneer Square area was largely abandoned and became the target of an urban renewal plan about that would have demolished all the old buildings and built parking decks to serve downtown.  In 1961, Seattle Hotel became the first building to be razed, and a parking deck was built in its place.  This spurred a citizen-lead preservation effort that saved the old buildings and saw them rehabilitated by 1970, when the Pioneer Square-Skid Road District was added to the National Register of Historic Places (70000086); as the name indicates, the district includes Pioneer Square.  In 1977, the Pioneer Building (1892) and the nearby Tlingit Totem Pole (1899) and Iron Pergola (1909) were named a National Historic Landmark and added to the National Register of Historic Places (77001340).  The Iron Pergola had been listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 (71000875).

Pioneer Place, a small triangular park, has Iron Pergola on the south (Yesler Way), Tlingit Totem Pole on the west (1st Avenue), Pioneer Building on the east, and Chief Seattle bronze bust between Iron Pergola and Pioneer Building.  Pioneer Building is a Richardsonian Romanesque-style office building (1892); facade materials include brick, stone, terra cotta, and iron.  Over the years, it has housed many sorts of businesses, including Seattle's first speakeasy, during Prohibition.

The Chief Seattle bust (preceding photo) is beyond the two signs in the foreground, which say (left) Far Away Brothers and Sisters We Still Remember You and (right) Chief Seattle Now the Streets Are Your Home -- perhaps references to the fact that Chief Seattle's Suquamish Tribe was removed from this area to a reservation in the mid-19th century.
