From a collection of some 500 Boeing slides that I've had scanned from my archives. Hope they will provide some enjoyment and nostalgia from a bygone age.

Another murky day at London Heathrow!
A shot of one of the Boeing 747 freighters that Pan Am leased from various airlines in the mid to late 1970s. This one has had Pan Am logos added but retains the basic Flying Tigers bare metal finish. The aircraft was heading for the cargo area.

N903PA c/n 20100 Boeing 747-123 was delivered new to American Airlines as N9661 in June 1970, but only flew with the airline for four years before being converted to a freighter in 1974 and delivered to Flying Tigers as N800FT. The aircraft was leased to Pan Am as N903PA for just 18 months, from Jan78 to Jul79, and then spent two more years with Flying Tigers before returning to American Airlines as N9661. The aircraft was sold to United Parcel Service (UPS) as N674UP in 1984 and flew with the airline until 2002. The aircraft was flown to Roswell for storage in 2003, believed broken up sometime in the 2000s.

Pan Am and the Boeing 747 - Pan Am was the first airline to place an order for the Boeing 747, ordering more than $500m worth of aircraft in 1966. The airline, helmed by the innovative and well-known Juan Trippe, ordered 25 747s, coming out to about $20 million each. It became the launch customer and operator for the type, operating its first revenue flight in January 1970 on the prestigious New York to London-Heathrow route.

Between 1969 and 1991, Pan Am would receive 65 Boeing 747s, according to Planespotters.net. Of these, 44 were 747-100s, 10 were 747-200s, and 11 were 747SPs.

After about 20 years of operation, in 1991, Pan Am was already under bankruptcy protection, and it closed its doors for good in December of that year.
