Star Trails Over Meteora, Greece - a photo on Flickriver

            Concentric star trails were captured above Meteora, Greece, by multiple repeated exposures (two hours long cumulatively) during a chilly summer night in late September, just prior to the equinox.

The Polaris alone remained steady at the very center of the star trails. The Polaris or North Star is viewed above the rock formation called “Ampária” (left). Polaris (aka “alpha Ursae Minoris”) is the circumpolar star closest to the north celestial pole. The Polaris is a triple star system about 433 light-yrs (133 parsecs) away from Earth.

Another rock formation is clearly seen on the right side; it is called “Bándovas”. There is a third rock formation, remote and barely discernible, between Amparia and Bandovas: it is called “Pyxari.”

Meteora is the name of the group comprising many impressive and lofty rock formations: The sandstone megaliths’ height varies 1,000-2,067 ft (300-630 m). The rock masses were formed 60 million years ago, are geologically unique and listed in UNESCO world heritage sites.
