Tom Weld artwork (8): 1999 Mass graves (Kosovo, Timor, Angola etc)

            Tom Weld’s powerful artwork is composed of faux ‘satellite imagery’ on which he superimposes details of borders, violence and expropriation. Because it is ‘fictional’, but based on fact, it communicates about the arbitrariness of violence and injustice; ‘I’ could be victim or aggressor, on one side of a border or a safe haven, or another. Victims are victims because they happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  His work doesn’t make excuses for violence, however; it is very clear where he stands. The very arbitrariness of the violence makes it reprehensible. Some of the work is truly apocalyptic.

The photos in this album are only a small selection and do not do justice to the colour and detail in his work. This artwork was photographed when on display at the World Beyond War conference in Limerick, October 2019 (see separate album of photos). You may need to zoom in to get detail.
