Paisley Abbey, Paisley, Scotland. - a photo on Flickriver

            Paisley Abbey was founded around 1163 by Walter FitzAlan as a Cluniac monastery on land he owned in Renfrewshire. In 1245 it was raised to the status of an Abbey, but in 1307 much of the Abbey was destroyed by fire then restored again in the 14th century. In 1315 Walter Fitzalan married Marjory Bruce daughter of King Robert the Bruce, she died in 1316 in the Abbey following a riding accident, but gave birth to a son, King Robert II of Scotland the 1st of the Stewart monarchs. The Abbey is the final resting place of the six High Stewards of Scotland, along with Marjory Bruce and the wife of King Robert II and King Robert III. It is also believed that Sir William Wallace who played a prominent part in the Scottish Wars of Independence was educated in the Abbey. A succession of fires and collapse of the tower in the 15th and 16th centuries left the Abbey in partial ruined state with the eastern section being plundered for its stone. From 1858 to 1928 reconstruction work was carried out by architect Macgregor Chalmers but was finally completed by Edinburgh born architect Sir Robert Lorimer.
