Aqueous Abstract - Mardi Gras (4832)

            My first photo in a series from my own aqueous fluid photo challenge.  The colors used were chosen to celebrate the Mardi Gras season (green, gold and purple) and the saturation enhanced to provide a burst of color.

Setup: 5 gallon (19 Litre) glass fish tank filled with clear water, camera, tripod, 2 off camera flash units, various ink colors (I used Artist's Loft [Level 1] acrylic ink I bought at Michael's diluted roughly 2 parts water to 1 part ink, and small plastic squeeze bottles.  Mix the ink thoroughly.  Submerge the tip in the water in order to limit air bubbles & squeeze firmly.  Place flash units on either side of water tank.  Place colored poster board behind the tank that compliments the ink colors you choose.  

Try experimenting with the water/ink ratio to get more or less color/transparency & density..  Experiment with flash speed, ISO, shutter speed to freeze the action, yet brightly light the ink. Set your lens aperture at a higher number (smaller opening) in order to get a full depth of field  Try using something other than water to mix with ink (milk, yogurt, Gatorade, etc).  

Warning: You will need to change water after each series of shots you take so that you have a clean tank, so be outside or near a sink and near a water source!
