Armchair Traveling - A Temple at Wat Hanchey, Cambodia

            Today's edition of Armchair Traveling takes me back to our time on the Mekong River in Cambodia. We stopped along the river to visit Wat Hanchey, a 7th Century Buddhist Temple complex. This is considered a thriving religious site and is a complex of both Hindu and Buddhist temples. The oldest part in this complex dating from 7th or 8th century plays an important role in the worship during the time of Chenla Empire. In Khmer's belief home of Hindu gods was on the Mountain Meru, but there was no actual mountain in this part of country. A climb to the top of the mountain (hill) gives a panoramic view of the Mekong River below. 

A stop along the river means that the captain pulls the boat up parallel to the shore, and the crew gets out to flatten out some of the muddy bank and lay a carpet over it, along with a short gangway so that we can get off the boat - no docks or piers! When we reboarded the boat, they took our shoes and gave them a good cleaning before returning them in front of the doors of our staterooms.
