Saturn IB, SA-209 - a photo on Flickriver

Saturn IB, SA-209

            The SA-209, a Saturn IB rocket, on display at the Kennedy Space Center visitor spot. At the very top of the rocket, if it were standing upright, is a facilities testing mock-up of an Apollo Command and Service Module (CSM). The rest was made as flight hardware. The rocket, along with Apollo CSM-119, were assembled for possible use as the Skylab rescue mission for Skylab 4. The rescue wasn't needed, so they became museum pieces.

For some reason, the display of CSM-119 doesn't mention the Skylab rescue mission, or that it could take five astronauts: two to fly it, and the three crew of Skylab. CSM-119, on top of AS-208, another Saturn IB, made it to LC-39B for a rescue of Skylab 3 that came close to happening.

When I last took pictures of AS-209, it had paint peeling off and faded reds. Its been fixed; looks much nicer now.
