Beaver Creek Cemetery 13 Color - a photo on Flickriver

            I believe I can make out that this person's parents were William and Eliza and that they passed away in January, 1828.

Deep in the woods in Kershaw, South Carolina down several unkept dirt roads lies an old cemetery slowly being overtaken by nature. It sits on the site of an old baptist church that was once in the area. Beaver Creek Baptist built at least two churches here. Information is hard to come by, but a member of the small congregation told us what he knows. One wood structure at this location was burned during the War Between the States and was rebuilt at tis location. A second fire destroyed the next biuilding in the 1880s.

By now, the community was served by an aditional two churches, so the congregation decided to build the new church across Beaver Creek in Lancaster County. That building still stands and sees a small congreation every Sunday.

Meanwhile, they serve the old cemetery as best they can. We noticed a few trees had been cut back recently on the roadway to access the cemetery. You can make out more graves than those marked by headstones and/or foot stones. One foot stone dates back to 1800. We were led to believe there were older graves there and there may be. We decided to call it a day and explore more at a later date. 

The area around the old church location has been abandoned. It's nothing but woods and an old dirt road now. The road the cemetery is on has all but grown over in places. We took a 4X4 Jeep CJ7 down, but trucks or SUVs with a larger wheel span may have trouble accessing the road. A car or non-4X4 would have never made it this far.

A second dirt road led to the road the cemetery is on and it needs to be tackled with a 4X4. Apparently the county is supposed to maintain the road, but I susepct it has been a long time since they did that. This road is named for the cemetery, but it spans 1.2 miles of ruts and mud puddles.
