Somebody’s favorite bird…Turkey Vulture

            Somebody’s favorite bird…

While standing roadside focusing on this Turkey Vulture nestled high up in the trees, a car pulled up next to me wanting to talk. Instantly annoyed with the rudeness, I turned around to better hear what she was saying to see the sweetest looking elderly couple grinning ear to ear with excitement. The lady in the passenger seat pointed at my subject and said, “That is my favorite bird” and then sat back, continuing to flash a somewhat crazed grin.

Fortunately my filter does work sometime, as I wanted to shout “What that disgusting thing…are you nuts!” Instead I just smiled and said “Not mine, but I do appreciate what they do for us” to which she nodded and they drove on past. I thought about her off and on all day and especially when editing this shot. I would like to know why it is her favorite bird. Did she find herself at some point in her life with a pet vulture…or find herself in need trying desperately to try and make it taste like chicken for her and her family…did one attack the stinky bully next door granting the entire species hero status in her mind? The possibilities are endless.

I guess it is good to know that the most hideous and disgusting among us still might be somebody’s favorite!
