Pam became one of my flickr contacts 117 months ago and soon became a flickr friend. Last spring while I was visiting relatives in Southern California I got to meet her in person for the first time. We met at the parking lot of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve and she showed me around her favorite local nature park where she finds many of her images. When I first added her as a contact almost ten years ago, she described herself in her profile as a beginner. I gave her a hard time about that. In my opinion she was never a “beginner” as she posted elegant images from the start. But she was and is a serious student of photography as her photostream demonstrates.

Late in 2012 I decided to try the Cory Booker food stamp challenge, attempting to eat for a week on the $30 a week the average New Jersey food stamp recipient received then, posting my progress on flickr. Pam, a nutritionist, joined the challenge as well. This led to many exchanges on nutrition between us, both serious and humorous, and I found out both how knowledgeable she is and what a wonderful a sense of humor she has. As a result of my own further research I ended up a proponent of the metabolic disorder/refined carbohydrate hypothesis of diet and heart disease while she holds to the older saturated fat hypothesis.

In any case, in our years as flickr friends I’ve found out how dedicated she is to her faith, her family, her profession and her photography. On our Bolsa Chica walk we got to an area with some wildflowers which looked like a good background for some portraits of each other, hers shown here. She doesn’t post this work on flickr, but she also does outstanding wedding photography and showed me some examples on her cell phone. After the photowalk we enjoyed some dinner. Thanks again Pam for a very enjoyable afternoon and evening. And, since inquiring minds want to know, I found out the origin of her beautiful flickr handle Pavonne comes from her name, Pamela Avonne. Since this was the first time we met in person, this is another addition to my hundred strangers series, number 6.
