Quartzite (Kona Dolomite, Paleoproterozoic, 2.2 to 2.3 Ga; Marquette South Outcrop, Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA)

            Quartzite from the Precambrian of Michigan, USA. (6.8 centimeters across at its widest)

These rocks are part of the Kona Dolomite, a well-known stratigraphic unit that outcrops in the vicinity of Marquette, Michigan.  The unit was named after the Kona Hills to the southwest of Marquette.  Color variation and susceptibility to polishing make Kona rocks popular with rockhounds and lapidarists.  Common lithologies in the Kona include metadolostone, silicified metadolostone, stromatolitic metadolostone, quartzite, argillite, and slaty metadolostone.  Kona beds are structurally tilted and have been multiply metamorphosed during Precambrian orogenic events.
