Nikon D610 12/27/2013

            My new Nikon D610 FX-format (full frame) DSLR camera, shown with the AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G lens and a WU-1b wireless mobile adapter. This is my current rig for shooting concerts and other events. My older Nikon D5100 has served me well for the past 2.5 years and ~50,000 shots, but is now my backup/secondary camera. Luckily, most of my glass was already FX, so I will not incur any additional costs due to switching from a DX to FX body.

I will continue to use my set of Nikon f/1.8 primes (28mm, 50mm, 85mm) on the D610 at concerts, since the small L.A. clubs I shoot at most often -- namely The Hotel Cafe and Room 5 Lounge -- have very dim lighting conditions. This is evident if you view the previous photo of Kate Earl in my Flickr stream (I had to shoot at ISO 6400 and f/1.8 in order to get a decent shutter speed for acceptable exposure). Also, the primes seem to yield sharper and more reliable results vs. the 24-70mm lens shown here... at least under similar low-light conditions.

I've read reviews that the AF system on the D610/D600 does not function in extremely low light unless the AF-assist illuminator light is turned on or unless there is enough contrast at the focal point. I am hoping this will not be an issue for me. I figured that the D610's low-light AF capability should at least be better than the D5100, so if I didn't have a problem with the D5100... then I shouldn't have a problem with the D610 given the same lighting conditions. The more expensive Nikon D800 and Df bodies supposedly handle low light AF much better, but I did not want to deal with the huge 36MP RAW files from the D800 (I shoot RAW only) and I do not care for the retro look of the Df.

The WU-1b wireless adapter will be very useful for transferring photos on-the-fly from the D610 to my iPhone 5 during events, for posting preview/check-in pics on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
