Shop Window, Mr Tattoo - a photo on Flickriver

            This is another image from a morning wander through downtown St Catharines, Ontario about a month ago, armed only with my cell phone. At the Western limit of King Street is a small shop that has relatively recently become a tattoo parlour under the name Mr Tattoo. The shop window has some 1960s vintage coloured lettering proclaiming its business ‘TATTOO’. By means of the post processing, the lettering comes out a bit better, particularly for the end windows and additionally, the ‘leather’ couch inside was rendered more visible. - JW

Tech Details:

Taken using a Samsung Galaxy S5 mobile phone in the default (fully auto) mode but just for general interest that means it was shot using the 4.8mm (31mm classic 35mm film equivalent) lense at fixed f/2.2, ISO 40, at 1/1193 sec to produce a jpeg file. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Samsung jpeg source file: set final image size to be 9000px wide, perspective correction for keystoning, use the Graduated Neutral Density/GND tool  rotated to cover the right side window and then darken it to get a better tonal range match to the centre window in the frame, increase Contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, increase Vibrance, boost black level, enable Dynamic Range Compression at default levels, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: load the image twice as layers, top layer for end windows adjustment and bottom layer for middle window adjustment, add a black/transparent layer mask to the top/end windows layer and use a large soft-edged rush with white paint to make the two end windows controlled by the top layer leaving the middle section transparent so the adjustments to the bottom layer  only show through for the middle window area, for the top/end widows layer increase overall contrast  saturation significantly and then adjust the colour balance to reduce the yellow/amber colour cast, for the bottom/middle window layer also adjust contrast and saturation somewhat, create new working layer from visible result, sharpen slightly, save, scale image to 6000px wide, add fine black and white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3800 wide for posting online, sharpen slightly, save.
