小翠襯櫻 ( 普通翠鳥 ) - a photo on Flickriver

            翠鳥 Common Kingfisher 【學名：Alcedo atthis】佛法僧目 / 翠鳥科 / 雄性翠鳥。俗名：魚狗、天狗、魚獅、川翡翠、柳翠、魚虎、水狗，小翠、釣魚翁、普通翠鳥。

臺灣屬留鳥型態，大多棲息於海拔1200公尺以下的各種海域，常貼近水面做平面飛行，猶如一艘寶藍色的火箭快速飛行。

公母體型差異不大，通常都是靠嘴喙的顏色來區分，公鳥整個嘴喙呈現黑色；母鳥下嘴喙橙紅色，基部黑色。

覓食前會先暫停在高處，如：樹枝、岩石邊，等待機會，鎖定目標後，垂直衝入水中補食小魚，抓到食物後，會飛至附近樹枝或岩石上，將小魚甩暈，翻轉魚頭，然後吞入。觀察其求偶期間，公翠鳥還會為了討好母翠鳥，將抓食獵物給母鳥食用 ( 此時魚尾便會朝向自己 )。

雖然翠鳥未列入保育物種，但也因為海邊、河川的整治工程，而將翠鳥以岸邊土堤築巢地點給破壞掉，也淪為受害者之一。
